When Nike introduced the Air Rift in 1996, split-toe running shoes weren't exactly an obvious commercial proposition. Inspired by Kenyan distance runners and named after the Great Rift Valley, the design was part of Nike's more experimental approach to performance footwear. Thirty years later, the Air Rift has found an entirely different audience, becoming a favorite among people who appreciate a sneaker that doesn't look much like a sneaker. Some of Nike's strangest ideas have aged remarkably well.
The Women's Air Rift returns in 2026 with its unmistakable split-toe construction, lightweight silhouette and adjustable straps. Somewhere between a running shoe and a sandal, it's a design that has always resisted easy categorization. We're particularly fond of the fact that Nike hasn't tried to make it look more conventional. That would rather defeat the point.
